There’s been a significant trend towards what is often called “natural wine” over the last 2 or 3 years.  Those two words encompass a very broad spectrum of practice, both in the vineyard and the cellar, some of it formally accredited and much of it not.   Whether “Organic’ or “Natural” or “Biodynamic”, we take a look behind the scenes to understand what these terms mean for the wine in your glass.  We’ll cover terms like vegan-friendly and skin contact and the use of sulphur in winemaking.

Is this trend the next best thing since the proverbial sliced bread – or merely a return to traditional practice?

If you don’t have a favourite organic or biodynamic wine to open, here are some options:-

From Majestic Wines (‘Mix Six’ prices) – Biodynamic – Viognier, Domaine des Granges de Mirabel, M Chapoutier, ’19 (£12.99) and/or Organic – D.O.Terra Alta, Garnacha, Dardell, ’20 (£8.99) and/or Lirac, ‘Roquedon’, Alain Jaume ‘18 (£14.99).

From The Wine Society – Organic – Anjou Blanc, ‘Le P’tit Chenin’, Château de la Roulerie, ’21 (£10.95) and/or Biodynamic – Sylvaner Reserve, Rolly Gassman, ‘19 (£13.95) and/or – Organic – Yecla, Monastrell, Parcelas Ecologico, (£7.95) and/or Biodynamic – Moselle, La Haut Bassières, Pinot Noir Château de Vaux ‘20, (£14.50) and/or – Skin Contact – Vinho Verde, Alvarinho, Anselmo Mende Contacto, Moncao & Melgaco, ‘20 (£12.95).
